Don't get confused by all the hooplah on the internet. These are the things that actually matter if you're looking to build fitness- for performance, or life.
These days it seems like there are a million things that you should be doing, in order to gain fitness or performance. But these 3 are the most important pillars for fitness.
3.What is the ONE thing you need?
Confused?
Yup. so is everyone else.
When it comes to building your fitness- whether for weight loss, or for performance, very few people know what the single most important thing is- FOR THEM.
Sleep?
Maybe.
Nutrition?
Probably.
Consistency?
Could be.
It all depends on you, your personality, and what your goals are. Each one of these is in fact important, but which one is MOST important will depend on where you are, and what your needs are.
Want to drop body fat quickly? It’s probably Nutrition.
Want to get strong? Could be sleep or consistency.
Figure out the single most important lynchpin, but make sure you’re starting by taking immediate imperfect action.
STARTING with an action- as imperfect at it may be- is one of the fastest ways to help you get it right.
2. Push the Negative Nancy's and Norman's Out of Your Regular Interactions
We tend to gather with one of the following two kinds of people:
- Those who are much like us
- Those who reflect the minimum we’re willing to accept
Problem is, that when you decide to take action and change your fitness, looks, or to take control of your health, you’re shaking up the status quo.
While some in your circles will be supportive, others will be too busy trying to chop you down, in any number of ways.
As you recognize who these people are, begin to build your days in a way that you have very limited interactions with them.
You don’t need that garbage in your life. You’re moving forward. You’re better than letting someone else undermine your future, healthier, self.
1. Do Something FUN!
It’s all suffering and super intense workouts you see now:
How many calories did you burn
How far did you go
How many watts did you hold
How many PR’s did you set
But really, NONE of that is going to help you stay on track. Yes, getting the rewards along the way IS important, but it comes in a far second behind enjoying what you’re doing.
Love being outside? Ride a bike, go for a hike, join an orienteering group.
Prefer air conditioning and a hot shower ASAP?
Find a fitness center that you like, and enjoy going to.
Splurge (a little) on the membership if you need to- The more you enjoy heading to that place, the easier it will be for you to get there when you have “one of those days”.
Yes, it really is that easy!
These 3 items may seem a little silly, but just give it a shot for 2 months, and see how it goes. In my over 20 years in the fitness industry, I’ve never seen anyone whose doing all 3 of these, who isn’t speeding along to their fitness goals, and enjoying the ups and downs along the way.
